- Apple's own guidance for storing a device long term is to charge it to around 50 percent, keep it somewhere cool and dry, and top it back to 50 percent every six months.
- Full and flat are both bad. A battery left at zero for months can discharge to a state where it will not accept a charge again.
- Sealed original packaging is part of the specification in wholesale. Once it is opened, the lot is a different product.
- Organize by model, then configuration, then grade, and record where each lot physically sits so a buyer's order can be picked without opening boxes.
- Stock that sits is capital that is not working, and in this category it is also depreciating.
What actually matters when you hold phone stock?
Between buying and selling, a lot of phones is not idle. Its battery is aging, its packaging is either intact or it is not, its paperwork either matches the boxes or it does not, and its market value is moving. Storage is the discipline of keeping all four from drifting while the stock waits.
| Storage factor | Why it matters | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | Heat is the main accelerator of lithium ion capacity loss. Apple lists a device storage range of minus 20 to 45 degrees Celsius and an operating comfort zone of 0 to 35. | Store away from exterior walls, roof space and loading doors. A stable room beats a cold one that swings. |
| Humidity | Moisture corrodes contacts, marks packaging and can trip liquid contact indicators, which changes how a unit is graded on arrival. | Apple's phrasing is a cool, moisture free environment. Keep pallets off concrete floors and use desiccant in sea freight cartons. |
| Charge level | Devices stored at full charge age faster, and devices stored flat can drop into deep discharge and refuse to power on. | Follow the manufacturer line: around 50 percent, checked and topped up every six months. |
| Packaging | Sealed retail packaging is a priced attribute. Opened or damaged boxes move a lot into a lower description. | Do not open sealed units to inspect. Inspect on receipt, then leave sealed stock sealed. |
| Organization | A lot you cannot pick without opening everything costs labor on every enquiry and risks damaging what you open. | Segregate by model, configuration and grade. Label the outside of each carton with what is inside. |
| Documentation | If the manifest does not map to a physical location, the manifest is a guess. | Record bay or rack against every line, and keep IMEI ranges tied to cartons. |
| Insurance | Phones are high value per cubic meter, so a small footprint can carry a large declared value. | Declare stock at replacement value and review the figure as holdings change, not annually. |
| Holding cost | Capital tied up in stock earns nothing and the stock itself is depreciating. | Track days on hand per model and treat it as a live number, not a year end one. |
How should used phones be stored?
Cool, dry, dark and stable. The specific numbers worth knowing come from the manufacturer rather than from trade folklore. Apple's published battery guidance gives a device storage temperature range of minus 4 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit, which is minus 20 to 45 degrees Celsius, and an ambient comfort zone of 32 to 95 Fahrenheit, or 0 to 35 Celsius. Apple also tells owners to keep stored devices in a cool, moisture free environment.
Note what those two ranges mean together. The storage range is what the hardware survives. The comfort zone is where the battery is happy. A unit that regularly runs near the top of the storage range will not destroy your stock, but it will take capacity off every battery in it, and battery health is a line buyers check. Our guide to iPhone battery health and the 80 percent rule explains why that percentage carries so much price with it.

What battery level should phones be stored at?
Around half. Apple's instruction for long term storage is direct: charge the device to roughly 50 percent, and do not fully charge or fully discharge it. If the stock is going to sit for more than six months, Apple says to bring it back to 50 percent at that interval.
The reason both extremes are avoided is that they stress the cell in opposite ways. A battery held at full charge sits under sustained voltage. A battery left flat keeps self discharging until it can fall into a deep discharge state, and a device in that state may not accept a charge at all when you finally plug it in. For a trader that is not a battery problem, it is a dead unit in a lot that was sold as working.
Does storage affect phone resale value?
Yes, through three separate channels, and only one of them is the battery.
- Battery health. Time and heat both take capacity. A lot held through a warm summer in an uncooled unit will test lower than the same lot held in a stable room.
- Packaging condition. In wholesale, sealed is a specification, not a nicety. Scuffed, crushed or opened retail boxes move a lot into a different and lower description even when every handset inside is perfect.
- Model age. The clock does not stop for stored stock, and holding through a launch window is the expensive version of this. See used iPhone depreciation in 2026.
How should bulk phone inventory be organised?
The organizing principle is simple: a buyer should be able to name a model, a configuration and a grade, and you should be able to pick that lot without opening a single sealed carton.
- Segregate before you shelve. Model, then storage capacity and color, then grade. Mixed cartons are the source of most picking errors.
- Label the outside. Model, configuration, grade, quantity and IMEI range or carton reference, printed and visible without moving the box.
- Keep grade boundaries physical. If Grade A and Grade B share a shelf, they will eventually share a carton. Our guide to grading used smartphones covers where those boundaries sit.
- Bind the manifest to a location. Every line on the manifest should carry a bay, rack or pallet reference. A manifest that only lists quantities describes an inventory you cannot find.
- Reconcile on receipt, not on dispatch. Check the incoming lot against its manifest before it is put away, using a repeatable process such as the one in our shipment inspection checklist.
Do I need insurance for phone inventory?
Phones concentrate a lot of value into very little space, which is easy to underestimate. A few pallets can represent a sum a general contents policy was never sized for. The practical points: declare replacement cost rather than what you paid, review the figure when holdings change materially rather than once a year, and check whether goods in transit and stock held at a third party site are separate lines. Terms vary by insurer and by territory, so this is a conversation with a broker rather than a rule of thumb.
How does storage tie back to velocity?
Everything above is a cost of holding, and holding is the thing to minimize. Capital sitting in a rack is capital not buying the next lot, and unlike most warehoused goods, this stock loses value while it waits. Two lots bought and sold at the same prices return very different numbers if one turned in three weeks and the other in three months.
Storage discipline and buying discipline are therefore the same subject. Knowing which models clear quickly changes what you are willing to hold at all, which is the argument in the fastest selling used phone models in wholesale. Good storage protects stock you chose to hold. It cannot rescue stock you should not have bought.
Aikon is the discovery layer for that decision. Registered companies post buy and sell offers directly to a live feed, so you can see what is moving before you commit rack space to it, and deal company to company. It is free to join.
Frequently asked questions
How should used phones be stored?
Cool, dry, dark and at a stable temperature. Apple's published battery guidance gives a device storage range of minus 20 to 45 degrees Celsius and an ambient comfort zone of 0 to 35, and tells owners to keep stored devices in a cool, moisture free environment. Keep pallets off bare concrete and away from exterior walls and loading doors.
What battery level should phones be stored at?
Around 50 percent. Apple's long term storage instruction is to charge to roughly half and to avoid both a full charge and a full discharge, then to bring the device back to 50 percent every six months. A device left flat for months can fall into a deep discharge state and refuse to power on at all.
Does storage affect phone resale value?
Yes, in three separate ways. Heat and time reduce battery health, which buyers check as its own line. Damaged or opened retail packaging moves a lot into a lower description even when every handset inside is perfect. And the model keeps aging while it sits, so time on the shelf costs value on its own.
How should bulk phone inventory be organised?
Segregate by model, then configuration, then grade, before anything is shelved. Label the outside of every carton with model, configuration, grade, quantity and IMEI range. Keep grade boundaries physically separate, and record a bay or rack reference against every manifest line so an order can be picked without opening sealed cartons.
Do I need insurance for phone inventory?
Phones carry very high value in a small footprint, so cover written for general warehoused goods or against a stale declared value is often undersized. Declare replacement value rather than purchase cost, review it when holdings change materially rather than annually, and check whether goods in transit and stock held at third party sites are separate lines. Terms vary by insurer and by territory.
