What does FRP lock mean? Full form, 'status: triggered', and what it means for a phone

FRP is Factory Reset Protection, Google's Android anti-theft lock. It ties a device to the Google account that was signed in before a reset, so the phone asks for that account at setup. Here is the full form, when FRP triggers, what "FRP status: triggered" means on a report, and what a buyer does about it.

Key takeaways
  • FRP is the full form of Factory Reset Protection, a standard Android security feature from Google.
  • It arms when a device is reset while a Google account is still on it, and it asks for that account at the next setup.
  • "FRP status: triggered" and "FRP locked" mean the same thing on a device report: the unit will stop at the Google account screen.
  • FRP triggered does not mean stolen. Lost or stolen status is a separate IMEI check against the GSMA blacklist.
  • The dependable routes are account-based: the seller removes the Google account before the reset, or the original account holder signs in.

What is the full form of FRP?

FRP stands for Factory Reset Protection. That is the full form in mobile and in Android: a security layer Google built in so that wiping a device does not automatically make it usable by whoever holds it.

The phrase turns up in several shapes, all pointing at the same feature. "FRP lock" is the lock itself. "FRP locked" and "FRP status: triggered" describe a device with it armed. "FRP clear", "FRP off" and "FRP not triggered" describe one without. Listings and device reports often write the acronym alone, as in "FRP: triggered", which is why the three letters get searched so often.

What does FRP lock mean in a phone?

It means the phone has remembered the Google account that was on it before a factory reset, and it will ask for that account before it lets anyone finish setting the device up.

The mechanic is simple. While a Google account is signed in and syncing, the device keeps a record of it in a partition a factory reset does not erase. If a reset happens without the account being removed first, that record survives, and on the next boot the setup wizard asks for a Google account previously added and synced to that device before it will continue.

Google's Android Help page Help prevent others from using your device without permission is direct about the consequence: to factory reset a protected device you need to either unlock the screen or enter the Google account password, and if you cannot give that information during setup, you will not be able to use the device at all after the reset. For a trader that is the whole commercial meaning of the term: an FRP locked handset is not deliverable stock until the account question is resolved.

FRP has been part of Android since version 5.1, Lollipop, and is present on current devices regardless of manufacturer. It is not a carrier feature and not a Samsung feature, though Samsung layers its own services on top, covered further down.

When does FRP trigger?

FRP does not fire on every reset. It arms when a device is wiped while a Google account is still on it, and it stays clear when the account is removed first.

The difference sits in how the wipe was done and what state the device was in.

How the device was resetGoogle account still on the device?FRP after the reset
Erase from within Settings, screen lock entered, account removed firstNoClear. The unit sets up normally for a new owner.
Erase from within Settings, screen lock entered, account left in placeYesArmed. Setup will ask for that account.
Recovery mode or hardware-button wipeYesArmed. This is the most common cause on wholesale lots.
Fastboot or flashing wipe on a locked bootloaderYesArmed. Reflashing firmware does not clear the account record.
Remote wipe from Find Hub while the account is signed inYesArmed. The Google username and password are required at setup.

Two consequences follow. The safe preparation routine for resale is always the same: remove the Google account in Settings, remove the screen lock, then reset. And lots arrive locked through procedure rather than malice: a refurbisher wiping a hundred handsets through recovery mode because it is faster produces the same result as a device nobody prepared at all.

One detail catches people out: Google's guidance notes the account offered at the verification screen must be one previously added and synced to the device as an account or user, not a guest. Adding a fresh account shortly before wiping does not reliably give you a key afterwards.

What does "FRP status: triggered" or "FRP locked" mean on an IMEI check?

On an IMEI or GSMA-style device report, the FRP field describes the state of the lock on that handset. "Triggered" and "locked" both mean the device will stop at the Google account screen. Wording varies by provider, which is why one handset can be described four ways.

Status on the reportWhat it meansWhat it means for a buyer
FRP: OffFactory Reset Protection is not currently armed on the device. The unit should complete setup without a Google account prompt. Still worth confirming on a sample.
FRP: OnA Google account is registered on the device and protection is active, but the device has not necessarily been reset yet.Normal for a working handset in use. It becomes a problem only if the unit is wiped before the account is removed.
FRP: TriggeredThe device was reset while the account was still on it, so the lock is now waiting at setup. Not deliverable as a working handset until the account question is resolved.
FRP: LockedAnother wording for the same state as triggered.Treat identically to triggered.
FRP: Clear / Not triggeredThe device was reset correctly, with the account removed first.Ready for a new owner. This is what "FRP clear" should mean in a listing.

Two cautions. FRP status is not part of GSMA blacklist data, so a GSMA-style check may show blacklist status with no FRP field, and a report that carries one draws on a different source. And the field describes the state when the check ran, not a permanent property: a unit that reads clear today can be locked tomorrow if someone signs an account into it and wipes it through recovery. For how the other fields fit together, see how to read an IMEI check result.

Does FRP mean the phone is stolen?

No. FRP records one fact only: a device was reset before its Google account was removed. It says nothing about how the device was acquired.

The ordinary causes are mundane: bulk recovery-mode wipes at a refurbisher, trade-in phones handed over with the account still signed in, fleet returns where nobody removed the staff member's personal account, devices reset by a repair shop to test a board. Each produces an FRP locked handset with nothing untoward behind it.

Whether a device has been reported lost or stolen is answered elsewhere: an IMEI check against the GSMA blacklist. The two statuses are independent. A handset can be FRP locked and blacklist clean, or blacklist listed and FRP clear, and reading one as evidence of the other misprices stock in both directions. Our guides to carrier locked versus network locked versus blacklisted and blacklisted IMEI cover that side.

What does "FRP bypass" mean, and why it is not a route for a wholesale buyer

"FRP bypass" is the general term for any method that attempts to get past the Google account verification screen without the account. It is one of the most searched phrases attached to the acronym, usually by someone holding a locked handset.

For a professional buyer, bypass is not a commercial route, for reasons of reliability rather than morality. Bypass methods depend on gaps in specific software versions, and they stop working when the device takes a security patch, which modern Android devices do automatically. A handset that appears bypassed can return to the verification screen after an update, at which point it is a warranty problem in the hands of an end customer rather than a discount on a pallet. No serious refurbisher or carrier programme accepts stock on that basis.

There is also a signalling point. A lot offered with the suggestion that the lock "can be bypassed" tells you the seller has not obtained account removal and does not expect to. Price those units as parts, or decline.

The dependable routes are the account-based ones, and there are two:

Managed fleets add a step before either route: a device enrolled in mobile device management has to be released by the enrolling organisation's administrator first. Samsung stock can carry a further layer. Samsung's Knox Guard documentation describes a cloud service that lets an enterprise lock a device remotely to protect assets and payment plans, and notes that a locked device has its USB, Bluetooth, NFC, firmware update, factory reset and binary flashing capabilities restricted. That is a Samsung service separate from Google's Factory Reset Protection, cleared by the organisation that applied it. Our glossary entries on Knox and MDM set out how each behaves.

FRP vs iCloud Activation Lock vs carrier lock

Three locks get blurred together because they all stop a phone doing what a buyer expects. They come from different places and are cleared by different parties.

LockPlatformWhat arms itWhat it blocksWho clears it
FRP (Factory Reset Protection)AndroidA reset while a Google account is still on the deviceCompleting setup at allThe previous Google account holder
iCloud Activation LockiPhone and iPadFind My enabled with an Apple Account signed in at resetActivating the device at allThe original Apple Account holder
Carrier lockAny network deviceA contract or subsidy policy applied by the carrierOnly the use of other networks' SIMsThe carrier that applied it, on request

The difference in severity matters commercially. A carrier locked handset is a working phone with a restricted SIM: it has a market, a price, and a documented unlock path through the carrier. An FRP locked or activation locked handset does not complete setup at all until the account is dealt with. Pricing the three as one category is a common way to lose money on a mixed lot. Our iCloud Lock and Activation Lock wholesale guide covers the Apple side.

A single device can carry more than one of these at once, which is why a clean blacklist result is not on its own a clean activation state. Check each lock type separately.

How to check FRP status before you pay for a lot

FRP is cheap to check before payment and expensive to discover afterwards. Two passes cover it: a data pass across the whole manifest, then a physical pass on a sample.

  1. Get the IMEI list before you commit. A seller who supplies a full manifest is one you can check; without it you are pricing blind.
  2. Run the list in bulk. Put the manifest through a bulk IMEI check and read the lock and blacklist fields together, using how to read an IMEI check result if the layout is unfamiliar.
  3. Factory-reset a sample. Data is a filter, not a proof. Sample across the models and grades in the lot, reset each unit, and confirm it walks through the setup wizard without asking for any Google account.
  4. Check the Samsung layer separately. On Samsung stock, look at Knox warranty status under Settings, About phone, Software information, and ask whether any unit sits under a remote management or finance lock service.
  5. Write the definition into the terms. Agree in advance what "FRP clear" means, what sample size is checked on arrival, how long the inspection window runs, and what happens to units that fail.

What to do if a delivered lot arrives FRP locked

If units arrive locked, the resolution is a commercial conversation between the two companies. It goes faster when the evidence is tight and the terms were set in advance.

Document first. Record the IMEIs of the affected units, photograph the verification screen on a sample, and note the date received against the inspection window in your terms. A list of IMEIs with evidence attached is a claim; a message saying some phones are locked is a conversation.

Then go back to the seller with a specific ask. Three outcomes are worth asking for, in this order: the seller obtains account removal from the original account holder and the units are re-verified; the affected units are returned and credited under the agreed return terms; or the units are repriced at parts value and the difference settled. Which is available depends on what the two companies agreed before the money moved, which is the argument for setting it out at the quote stage.

Aikon is a discovery platform: companies find each other and post offers here, and terms, payment and any return are agreed and executed directly between the two companies. The protection on a deal is the one written into your own purchase terms, which is why the checks above sit before the payment step.

Quick FRP checklist for a lot

  • Ask for the full IMEI manifest before committing.
  • Run the manifest through a bulk check and read the FRP and blacklist fields separately.
  • Reset a sample and confirm setup completes with no Google account prompt.
  • On Samsung stock, check Knox and any remote management or finance lock separately.
  • Define FRP clear, the sample size, the inspection window and the remedy in the purchase terms.

FRP is a straightforward feature with a straightforward commercial consequence. It protects a device owner, it triggers on a procedural mistake rather than on wrongdoing, and it is checked and priced like any other attribute of a lot, provided the checking happens before payment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the full form of FRP?

FRP stands for Factory Reset Protection. It is the name Google gives to the Android security feature that ties a device to the Google account that was signed in on it, so that the device cannot simply be wiped and reused by someone else. In phone listings the same thing is written as FRP lock, FRP locked, or FRP status.

What does FRP lock mean in a phone?

It means the phone will stop at a Google account verification screen after a factory reset and will not finish setup until the credentials of a Google account that was previously added and synced to that device are entered. Google's Android Help states that if that information cannot be supplied during setup, the device cannot be used at all after the reset.

What does FRP status triggered mean?

On a device report or a wholesale manifest, FRP status triggered means the same thing as FRP locked: the unit was reset while a Google account was still on it, so it will demand that account at setup. A status of off, clear, or not triggered means the account was removed before the reset and the unit will set up normally for a new owner.

Does FRP lock mean the phone is stolen?

No. FRP records only that a device was reset before its Google account was removed, which happens routinely through recovery-mode wipes, hurried trade-ins, and fleet returns. Whether a device is reported lost or stolen is a separate question answered by an IMEI check against the GSMA blacklist, and the two statuses are independent of each other.

What does FRP bypass mean?

FRP bypass is the general term for any method that tries to get past the Google account verification screen without the account. It is not a route a wholesale buyer should price into a lot: methods depend on unpatched software versions, commonly stop working after a security update, and a bypassed handset can return to the lock screen in the hands of the end customer. The dependable routes are account-based.

How do you check FRP status on a wholesale lot before paying?

Run the IMEI list through a bulk IMEI check that reports lock and blacklist statuses, then physically factory-reset a sample of units and confirm each one completes the setup wizard without asking for a Google account. Agree in the purchase terms what FRP clear means, what sample size is checked, and how locked units are handled before the payment is made.
