What an FCC ID actually is
An FCC ID is an equipment authorization identifier. It is not a serial number and not a model number. It is the reference to a specific grant of certification issued to a specific company for a specific product.
Under the FCC rules, devices that intentionally emit radio frequency energy, from smartphones and tablets to Bluetooth earbuds, routers, and smartwatches, generally must be certified before they can be legally marketed in the United States. When a manufacturer completes the process through an accredited Telecommunication Certification Body, the FCC issues a grant and assigns the FCC ID. According to the FCC Office of Engineering and Technology, that identifier is made of a grantee code and a product code, and it is printed on the device so the physical unit can be tied back to its authorization on file.
One important caveat: not every electronic device carries an FCC ID. Products authorized under the Supplier's Declaration of Conformity procedure, and unintentional radiators that fall under different rules, are not required to be filed with the FCC and will not appear in the equipment authorization database. The format of an FCC ID: grantee code plus product code
An FCC ID is always two parts joined together: a grantee code that identifies the company, then a product code that identifies the specific product. Reading the two apart tells you a lot at a glance.
The rules for the grantee code are precise. According to the FCC Office of Engineering and Technology grantee code page, a grantee code is three characters when it starts with a letter (A to Z), and five characters when it starts with a number (2 to 9). The digits 0 and 1 are never used, to avoid confusion with the letters O and I. The product code is assigned by the grantee to identify each approved product, and it can be up to 14 characters made of capital letters, Arabic numerals, and hyphens.

Put together, a letter-led example looks like BCG-E3175, where BCG is the grantee code and E3175 is the product code. A number-led example looks like a five-character code such as one that starts with 2, followed by the product code. The hyphen you often see is optional and only used for readability; the database matches on the characters, not the dash. If you can split a code cleanly into a valid grantee code and a product code, it is at least plausibly formatted. If it cannot be split under these rules, treat it as suspect.

Where the FCC ID appears on a device
The FCC ID lives wherever the manufacturer can permanently mark it. On older or larger devices that is a printed label; on modern phones it is usually a software screen.
- On the housing. Many devices carry a small printed label on the back or base with the words FCC ID followed by the code, often next to other compliance marks.
- In the battery compartment. On devices with a removable battery or a user-accessible compartment, the label is frequently placed inside, out of sight but still permanent.
- As an electronic label. Since the rules were updated to allow electronic labeling, devices with a screen can display the FCC ID in software. On most phones the path is Settings, then About phone or General, then Regulatory, Certificates, or Regulatory labels.
- On the retail packaging or manual. For very small products, the code may also appear on the box or in the documentation.
For a quick physical check on a phone, dialing into the settings regulatory screen is usually faster than hunting for a printed label. On feature phones and accessories, check the housing and the compartment first.
How to look up an FCC ID, step by step
Once you have the code, a lookup takes under a minute. The authoritative source is the FCC itself, and several third-party mirrors present the same public data in a friendlier layout.
- Split the code. Separate the grantee code from the product code using the format rules above. The FCC search asks for the two parts separately.
- Open the official FCC search. Go to the FCC Office of Engineering and Technology Equipment Authorization search. The FCC hosts an FCC ID search entry point and a detailed generic search form for querying by grantee code, product code, and other fields.
- Enter the grantee code and product code. Type each part into its field and submit. The result is the grant of certification, listing the applicant, the equipment class, the approval date, and links to the filed documents.
- Open the exhibits. The grant links to test reports, internal and external photos, user manuals, and label drawings. The photos are the most useful part for a buyer, because they show what the certified device and its label should look like.
- Cross-check on a mirror if needed. Third-party sites such as fcc.report and fccid.io index the same public FCC records and are often quicker to browse. Both state plainly that they are not affiliated with the FCC; treat them as convenient views of the official data, not as the authority.
If a code does not resolve on the official search, that is meaningful. It can mean the code was mistyped, the device uses Supplier's Declaration of Conformity and was never filed, or the label is fabricated. Re-check the characters first, then decide.
What a lookup reveals
The grant record is a compact dossier on the certified device. For due diligence, a handful of fields do most of the work.
- The applicant. The company that holds the grant. This should be consistent with the brand you expect for the model.
- Equipment class and frequencies. What kind of device it is and which radio bands it was certified for, which tells you whether it matches the market you are selling into.
- Grant date. When certification was issued, which roughly brackets when the model came to market.
- Photos and label drawings. External and internal photos plus the label artwork. Comparing these against the physical unit is the single most effective counterfeit check available from public data.
- Test reports and manuals. The full technical filing, useful when a claim needs to be settled precisely.
Why wholesale buyers check FCC IDs
For anyone buying electronics in volume, the FCC ID is a cheap, fast filter that catches problems before money moves. It sits alongside the other checks a careful buyer runs on a lot.
The first use is spotting counterfeits. A cloned or fake device often carries a borrowed, mistyped, or entirely invented FCC ID. Pulling the grant and comparing the certified photos and label artwork against the physical unit exposes mismatches that a spec sheet never would. The second use is confirming US-market models. A device certified for another region may carry a different identifier or none at all under FCC rules, so a valid FCC ID is a signal that the unit was built and authorized for the US market rather than diverted from elsewhere. The third use is matching model numbers. The grant ties the FCC ID to a specific product, which lets a buyer confirm that the manifest, the box, and the device all describe the same thing.

FCC ID vs IMEI vs model number vs serial number
These four identifiers are easy to confuse because they often sit near each other on the same label. Each answers a different question.

The clean way to hold it in your head: the FCC ID and the model number describe the product, while the IMEI and the serial number describe the individual unit. An FCC ID lookup tells you the device type is genuine and certified; an IMEI structure and check tells you the specific handset and whether it validates. Serious buyers use both, because a genuine model can still contain a bad individual unit, and a clean individual unit is worthless if the model is a counterfeit.
What it means if a device has no FCC ID
A missing FCC ID is a prompt to look closer, not an automatic verdict. Sometimes it is normal, and sometimes it is the tell on a bad lot.
There are legitimate reasons a code can be absent or hard to find. The device may use an electronic label, so there is no printed code to see. It may have been certified under the Supplier's Declaration of Conformity path, which is not filed in the FCC equipment authorization database. Or it may be a product class that does not require certification at all. In these cases, absence is expected and not a problem.
The concerning cases are different. A mainstream phone or tablet with no discoverable FCC ID anywhere, a printed code that does not resolve in the official search, or a code whose certified photos plainly do not match the physical device all point to a counterfeit, a grey-market unit, or a relabeled device. When you hit one of these on a wholesale lot, slow down: re-check the characters, pull the grant, compare the photos, and if it still does not line up, price the risk in or walk away. A quick lookup at the sourcing stage is far cheaper than a returned pallet later.
